Safety Week

The following message is from Mr. Nelson concerning safety week next week.

Parents and Guardians,

Marlatt Elementary School will be conducting our annual "School Safety Week" September 19th 23rd. During the course of this week, we conduct a specific drill or two each day. Please know that if you should call the school during this week, and no one answers the telephone, it is most likely due to the impact of practicing one of these drills. We ask for your patience and apologize in advance for any inconvenience, but we do believe in exercising these important school safety drills.

Monday, September 19th - Evacuation
We will evacuate the building and walk to the Grace Baptist Church. In the event there was a real fire or other emergency that prevented us from being able to go back into the school, this is where you would go to pick up your child. You would be required to show a valid form of picture identification to do this. Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately and have appropriate shoes.

Wednesday, September 21st Fire drill and severe weather
We will evacuate the entire building as if there were a fire. We are required by law to execute this drill monthly, but this drill will be enhanced and involve members from the Manhattan Fire Department, including a "smoke" simulator. The fire department will respond as they would in the event of a true fire, and school officials will practice command and control procedures jointly with them.

The severe weather drill will be observed by officials from the Riley County Emergency Management team who will help us ensure our procedures are as efficient and safe as possible. Our entire building will take shelter in the basement here at Marlatt.

Thursday, September 22nd - Lock Down
This drill simulates a threat that has entered our building. We will simulate a "lock down" situation. All rooms will be cleared jointly between school and law enforcement officials.

Thursday, September 22nd- Lock Out Drill
This drill is conducted to simulate a potential threat outside of our building. In this event, no one would be permitted to enter the building. Currently, all of our doors are locked restricting access to our building from 8:00 AM to 3:50 PM. During the period of "lock out", no one will be permitted to enter or exit the building, including visitors or parents coming to pick up their child for an appointment.

Thank you,
Brett Nelson, Principal
